Vacation Planning To-Do List

The preparation that goes into traveling is not always the most fun, and it is sometimes difficult to remember everything to do prior to leaving on your trip.  Use the list below as a guide to help alleviate any last minute stress and to prevent running into any potential issues.

  1. If you are planning on traveling for an extended amount of time, consider putting your mail on hold (also any newspaper deliveries).
  2. Contact your credit cards and banks to let them know you will be traveling.
  3. If you are traveling with your passport, make a copy in advance of your trip so that you can carry the copy at all times, while leaving your passport in the safe back at your hotel.  Along with this, double-check that your passport has at least 6 months left before expiration, as some countries are very strict about having this in order to enter into their respective country.
  4. Print out any necessary flight/hotel/car rental confirmations you may need to carry with you.
  5. Renting a car internationally?  Check the rules of the country you are visiting to see if an International Driver’s License is required.  Renting a car for domestic travel? Before paying for any type of insurance on the rental car, check with the credit card company with which card you used to reserve the rental to see if there is any coverage with using that particular card.  Many credit cards, nowadays, offer this benefit.
  6. For those traveling to a foreign location, be sure to check whether or not a Visa is required, as well as if there are any entry or exit fees for your destination.
  7. In advance of any trips abroad, check the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website ( before leaving to ensure you have all the proper vaccinations and medications for your desired location.  Additionally, visit the State Department’s website ( to check for any last minute details, facts, and travel warnings/alerts regarding the area.  One final option here is to register your trip through this website, so you will be notified if there is an emergency in the country you are visiting.
  8.  Make sure to fill any routine prescriptions prior to departing to ensure you have them for the duration of your trip.
  9. Before heading out for an international trip, perform a little bit of research to see if you need to purchase a travel adapter so that you can utilize your electronics while traveling abroad.
  10. A last tip for those traveling internationally: check with your cell phone provider to see what charges may be incurred by using your phone while abroad. Best to know this in advance so you do not come home to any surprises and so you have the option to turn off your data and only connect to WI-FI.
